Structural renovation has become more and more common in recent years. Due to the high concentration in urban areas, most land has already been occupied by existing structures which later on may be renovated for different uses. However, due to deterioration over time or lack of maintenance, many existing structures may not be in a good condition for renovation which can then raise safety concerns.
One widely-accepted testing method is the test of structural deflection using real load application (load testing). The load used will either be determined by RE team or be specified by the consultant of a given project.
In order to avoid damage, RE uses dial gauges to determine structural deflection and real-time monitoring displacement transducers which are more appropriate for steel structures as the behaviour can be assessed immediately, and structural deflection due to temperature variation can be detected. Thus, the test can determine whether the structure can carry the designed load.
