Vibration Measurement and Monitoring

Vibration measurement is an important tool for comprehending the dynamic behavior of structures and the vibration sources. This process involves recording vibration signals using accelerometers or velometers (for acceleration and velocity respectively), capable of detecting tremors with magnitudes ranging from the minuscule scale of micro g to as high as more than 1000 g, depending on the type of vibration sensor used. Through vibration measurement, valuable insights into the frequency and mode shape of structural vibrations are gained, particularly applicable in understanding the behavior of high-rise buildings and long-span bridges. Furthermore, this technique is instrumental in assessing structural suitability for the installation of sensitive equipment, employing vibration criteria (VC) to determine if the structure can accommodate the installation. Additionally, vibration measurement plays a key role in pollution control efforts by monitoring vibrations induced by construction activities, mining, or traffic and train operations. This ensures that the magnitude of vibrations remains within acceptable limits, preventing any adverse impact on the well-being of individuals.
